CITY SIKHS – Express Yourself!

August 31, 2013 @ 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Free
Express Yourself! by City Sikhs Network is an opportunity to develop your public speaking skills by giving a 4 minute talk about what inspires you in your life.

4 minutes may not sound like a long time for a speech but some of the most powerful speakers in the world have mastered the art of conveying their core message in a concise way. We will also send you lots of tips to help you make the most of your 4 golden minutes and you’ll be surprised at how much ground you can cover in that time.

Do hurry though as we only have 36 slots available for speeches, so do register quickly to grab this opportunity. In order to register as a speaker, you will need to prepare a speaker bio, title and short description of your talk.

Don’t want to do a speech? No problem, just come and join as an audience member instead and support your friends who may be speaking, and at the same time, be showered with words of inspiration from the speakers.

Want to do a speech but not feeling confident? A lot of speakers will be in the same position as you and this is partly why we have created Express Yourself! which is a supportive, safe and non-judgemental environment to help you practice public speaking. So our advice would be to register anyway as this will be a great learning experience to help you overcome that fear of public speaking and help boost your self-confidence.

Time: 1:00pm – 6:00pm
Location: City of London Police Wood Street Police Station, Wood Street, EC2P 2NQ

Rules for Speakers
  • In order to register you must supply us with a brief bio, title and description of your talk which should sound and look professional. Please ensure there are no spelling mistakes.
  • The theme of this event is inspiration, so your talk must try to revolve around this theme. However, do feel free to express whatever it is you wish to even if it veers slightly off the general theme. Inspiration, after all, is a subjective topic.
  • Your talk must be 4 minutes or less. There will be a strict time-keeper on the day who will cut off speakers at the 4 minute mark. For this reason please ensure you are well prepared for your talk and time yourself before the event to make sure you do not over run your slot
  • No PowerPoint presentations are allowed. You may keep some notes, but we would encourage you to do your talk without any notes or note cards to help you
Tips for Speakers
  • The preparation for your talk is all part of the learning experience, so make sure you don’t leave it last minute!
  • Often when a person gets nervous on stage, they either speed up or slow down. To reduce this nervousness you may use a visualisation technique. Try to imagine yourself going on stage and doing your talk and delivering a powerful message. This type of visualisation acts as a kind of mental preperation
  • Before going on stage try and take some deep breaths just to calm the nerves
  • When you start your speech, start with a burst of energy and emotion. A powerful start can help give you the confidence to carry through the rest of your talk
  • Give your talk a logical structure which flows nicely from one point to another. Try not to jump between random, unconnected topics
  • At the end of your talk, leave the audience with just one key message, quote or tip and say it in a powerful, inspiring way
